Mary Mallon


Mallon (1869-1938) was detained on North Brother Island in the East River for being an asymptomatic carrier of typhoid fever, infecting several through her work as a cook. In 1907 she was arrested and sent to North Brother Island where she was kept in isolation for three years. After her release she continued to work as a cook and in 1915 she was returned to North Brother Island where she stayed until her death of pneumonia in 1938.
